He agrees, though not knowing she's apart of a terrorist gang that robs a bank. ![]() This time the lovers meet by accident and chance- Carmen X (the alluring and dangerous Maruschka Detmers in a controlled, if downtrodden debut acting role) asks of her uncle Jean if she can use his beach-side house to make a film with some friends. After almost a decade of weird, philosophical experimentation, they took on the opera of Carmen (the original story of which, unfortunately, I am not very knowledgeable of) and deconstructed it with some amusing self-awareness ("Uncle" Jean-Luc Godard at the start of the film is in a hospital of sorts, over-staying his welcome), while going back to Godard's olden days of movies with lovers on the run. The most exciting happening there is the operation they're plotting, step by step, for stealing cargoes of diamonds from the airplanes. The community does not have a lot of money, but its folklore is rich and its life is full of parties, sex, violence and excitement. And many of them work in the same place, Ben Gurion Airport luggage department, or help their community members, who do work there, to steal passengers' suitcases. They are not much concerned about obeying the country's laws. They put a lot of pressure on each other to get married only within their community. Among themselves they speak a rare language. ![]() The characters on this movie live like a closed tribe. ![]() The movie was a nominee to the Ophir Award in 11 categories. And since the Judaeo-Georgian language is a dialect, spoken by a small community, most of the cast had to learn it for this production. ![]() The dialogue on this film is partly in the Judaeo-Georgian language and partly in Hebrew. ![]()
